It is just with the end this starts to falter, nevertheless slap-right up finale rescues they throughout the ‘red’. Wonderfully staged and you may intelligently dialogued, it’ll have zero high difficulty from inside the living off the extremely unattractive identity.” [ 8 ]

Richard Brody from the New Yorker noted “It terse and you may taut flick noir is considering the latest personal and you may elite group conflicts of your own identity reputation, the fresh unlawful genius (starred because of the Cock Powell) behind a classy illegal local casino. The brand new film’s publisher and manager, Robert Rossen, sets up an excellent multidimensional chess video game, having mortal stakes, anywhere between Johnny, their company (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s wife (Ellen Drew), an effective cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you will an excellent scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whoever sister (Nina Foch) did at the gambling enterprise and you will old a good corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). The fresh new caustically epigrammatic software, the fresh new cast’s suavely regulated body language regarding love and you may menace, and you will Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and smartly cocky images (including their political conscience) get this pugnacious but really outlined spectacle an invisible antique of the genre.” [ ten ]

Photograph has action and suspense, and you can specific short joins off jokes to provide taste. Ace activities from the Cock Powell, once the a playing domestic overseer, and Lee J. Cobb, given that a police inspector, including up the rating . Whilst spot uses a common pattern, the latest characterizations is actually new while the performances adequate to overbalance. Dialogue try terse and you will topical, avoiding the sentimental, phoney contact. Unusual cam basics arrive occasionally to help you escalate attention and you will momentarily arrest the attention. Good teamplay from the Robert Rossen, increasing as manager-scripter, and you will Milton Holmes, brand-new author and you may associate producer, along with supports making this a mellow design.” [ 11 ]

Its primarily a matter of watching Mr. Powell read their paces stylishly while you are a large shed off actors and performers render him typical service. Evelyn Keyes takes on the nice little woman just who brings out brand new best in him and you will Ellen Received is the smooth and slinky vixen who gets your to your jams. Thomas Gomez was oily while the villain and Lee J. Cobb do a different ready trip given that a tired police inspector just who finally shuts the actual situation. A great deal of taking and you will puffing is done of the every concerned.” [ 12 ]
